Music hashtags still help people find your songs, but the rules changed. Instagram now allows five hashtags per post, Threads takes a single topic tag, YouTube shows up to three tags next to a video title, and TikTok reads your captions and on-screen words as much as your hashtags. This guide, updated in October 2026, gives you 200+ music hashtags for TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, organised by genre and by goal, and explains how many to use on each platform.
How music hashtags work on each platform in 2026
Each platform uses hashtags differently. These are the rules that matter for musicians, with the source for each.
| Platform | Rule | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram (posts, Reels) | Maximum five hashtags per post or reel since December 2025. Instagram recommends fewer, more targeted tags. Following hashtags was removed in late 2024. | Use three to five precise tags in the caption: genre, format, release. |
| TikTok | Hashtags are part of the “video information” TikTok reads, with captions and sounds. No official recommended number. | Three to five tags, plus clear keywords in the caption and on-screen text. |
| YouTube and Shorts | Up to three hashtags can appear by the title. If a video has more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them. | Two or three tags in the title or description. |
| Threads | One topic tag per post, which can contain spaces. | Pick the single most accurate topic (for example “jazz guitar”). |
| X | Hashtags group posts around topics and live moments. | One or two, mainly for release days, live shows and events. |

How many hashtags to use and how to choose them
Build three small sets, not one big list
For each release, prepare a few sets of three to five tags: one for performance clips, one for studio and behind-the-scenes content, one for release and show announcements. Each set mixes one broad tag, one or two genre tags and one goal tag.
Use your name as a tag
A tag built on your artist or project name (for example #YourNameLive) gathers your posts and fan posts in one place. Check it is not already used for something else.
Write for search, not only for hashtags
On TikTok and YouTube people type what they want to hear. Name the genre, the instrument and the song in the caption and, on TikTok, in the on-screen text.
Keep it honest
Do not add trending tags that have nothing to do with the post. They bring the wrong viewers, who leave quickly.
Promoting a release? Hashtags help people find a post. Reaching new listeners at scale takes a plan: release campaigns, Meta, Google and YouTube ads for musicians and press.
Tools to find music hashtags
Instagram and TikTok search. Type your genre or instrument and look at the tags and keywords suggested, then at what comparable artists use. Free and always current.
TikTok Creative Center (Trends). TikTok’s own trends section shows popular hashtags and songs by region. It requires a TikTok business login.
YouTube search suggestions. The autocomplete in YouTube search shows how people phrase music searches, which helps you write titles and pick tags.
Flick. A paid hashtag research and management tool for Instagram (search, collections, tracking).
Your own insights. Instagram and TikTok analytics show where views came from. Review them after each release and keep only the tags that brought views.
Common hashtag mistakes musicians make
Using more tags than the platform allows or reads. Instagram now stops at five; Threads takes one topic.
Only using huge tags. #Music describes almost every post. Add tags that say what kind of music it is.
Copying the same block on every post. A live clip and a release announcement need different tags.
Relying on #fyp. It says nothing about your music.
Forgetting the caption. On TikTok and YouTube, words in the caption and title matter as much as tags.
How we use hashtags in real campaigns
In the release campaigns we run for jazz and independent artists, for example Grégory Sallet’s Otsukaresama or Raíces by Ben García and Lucas Martínez, hashtags are a small part of the work. Our recommendation: keep them short and accurate (artist, genre, release), and put the effort into the content, the advertising and the press that bring new listeners.
FAQ
Do hashtags still work for musicians in 2026?
Yes, but as labels, not as a growth engine. Instagram says a few targeted hashtags help people understand what a post is about, and its head, Adam Mosseri, has said hashtags do not increase reach on their own. TikTok counts hashtags as part of the video information it reads, alongside captions and sounds. Use them to describe the post accurately; reach comes from the video itself.
How many hashtags should I use on Instagram?
Up to five. Since December 2025 Instagram limits posts and reels to five hashtags, and recommends fewer, more targeted tags rather than many generic ones.
How many hashtags should I use on TikTok?
TikTok does not publish a recommended number. We recommend three to five: one broad music tag, one or two genre tags and one for the content type (live, cover, studio). Put the important words in the caption and on-screen text too, because people search TikTok with keywords.
What hashtags should I use for a music video?
Combine the format (#MusicVideo, #OfficialVideo or #LiveSession), your genre (for example #Jazz or #IndieRock) and the release (#NewSingle or #OutNow). On YouTube, the hashtags in the title or description are clickable and up to three can appear next to the title.
Should I use #fyp or #foryou on TikTok?
They describe nothing about your music. TikTok has never said they boost distribution; its recommendation system relies on how people interact with your videos and on video information such as captions, sounds and hashtags. A genre or content tag tells the system more.
Can I use the same hashtags on every platform?
Not really. Instagram caps you at five, Threads takes one topic tag per post, YouTube ignores all hashtags on a video that carries more than 60, and TikTok reads keywords as much as tags. Keep one core set and adapt it per platform.
