On Wednesday 8 July 2020, Monart founder Gustavo Mezo was one of the speakers of “How to click with Latam: Connecting, Pitching and Storytelling for your projects”, an online panel organised by Le Bureau Export, the French music export office, as part of its (From) Home Export Days series.

Latam, ya!

(From) Home Export Days was the online programme Le Bureau Export launched in 2020 to keep connecting French music professionals with international partners. Its chapter Latam, ya!, held on 8 and 9 July 2020 in collaboration with the Embassy of France in Colombia, focused on Latin America with two panels, each followed by one-to-one meetings for members wishing to develop in the region. The second panel, How to click with Latam: Getting to Grips with Sync, was moderated by music supervisor Patricia Carrera the following day. Le Bureau Export’s jazz team invited Gustavo Mezo for his double focus on Mexico and France and for his view of exporting French artists to Mexico.

The panel

The panel was moderated by Mariana “Malfi” Dorantes (MalfiCo, Mexico). Alongside Gustavo Mezo (Monart), the panelists were Abraham Lopez (Altiplano), Adel Hattem (D Music Marketing) and Luis Felipe Rios (Rios Music). Prepared together beforehand, the discussion covered the strengths of each territory, how artists and their teams can build a campaign that distributors will consider, the role of public support compared with “just flying for a show”, the basic steps of a marketing campaign that helps future bookings in Latin America, and the regionalisation of projects. One idea guided the conversation: an artist does not need to tour Latin America to plan for growth there.

Broadcast live, replay online

The panel ran from 16:30 to 17:30 Paris time on StreamYard and was broadcast live on Le Bureau Export’s Facebook and YouTube channels, with a live chat open to the audience. Le Bureau Export invited its members, French music professionals, to follow it. The full one-hour replay is still available on YouTube, on the channel of the Centre national de la musique (CNM), and is embedded below.

One-to-one meetings with French companies

Right after the panel, Gustavo Mezo took part in one-to-one video meetings with French music companies: Gaya Music Productions, GiantSteps, Upton Park, Ozma, InFiné, Zamora Productions and Chinese Man Records.

Feedback

The day after, the organisers wrote to the speakers that the panel had been “sharp and to the point”. A few days later they added that feedback from their members was very good.
