Jazz mexicain à Paris: Gerry López and Nacho Alcántara at the Café Universel

From 25 to 27 July 2011, the Café Universel in Paris hosted three nights of Mexican jazz, “Jazz mexicain à Paris”, presented by L’année OFF du Mexique en France. Admission was free.

Nacho Alcántara, Alma Mía

On Monday 25 July, guitarist Nacho Alcántara presented Alma Mía, a programme of Mexican love songs and forgotten pieces by traditional Mexican composers, arranged for jazz quartet.

Gerry López

On 26 and 27 July, saxophonist Gerry López, then 24 and from Ciudad Juárez, took the stage. He had already shared the stage with Antonio Sánchez, Eugenio Toussaint, Magos Herrera and Enrique Nery, and played with Paquito D’Rivera, Danilo Pérez, Brian Lynch and Adam Rogers.

What came next

It was during this visit to Paris that Gerry López heard about the entrance competition of the Conservatoire de Paris. He was admitted, moved to Paris, and in 2012 his Fro Trio won the best band award at Jazz à la Défense, as La Jornada reported.
